The Splendor Of Manila Bay
Manila Bay serves as the waterfront that supports the Manila port. The entrance of the bay is 19 kilometers wide and extends with a width of 48 kilometers.
Across the entrance are various islands that add beauty to its scenic view. Among them is Corregidor, which is 3 kilometres from Bataan. Along the island of Caballo, the mouth of the bay separates into North and South channels. El Fraile Island, a rocky island, is located on the south and outside it is the Carabao Island.
On the other side of the bay are volcanic peaks. Forty kilometres to the north is the Bataan Peninsula and the province of Cavite to its south. The bay plays an important role in the history as the setting for the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 and the siege of Corregidor Island by Japanese invaders in 1942.
Manila Bay is proud of its breathtaking sunset scenery thus considered as one of the finest natural harbour not only in Southeast Asia but in the world. It plays a vital role in the trade and industry in the city. It used to be a major fishing area and a source of living for early settlers, but with the industrialization and brisk urban development, the waters of the bay suffered the consequences and resulted to the decline water quality.
A large extent of the land facing the bay is highly urbanized that includes the government establishments such as the Philippines Senate and SM Mall of Asia. First class hotels, several tourist attractions and destinations are situated in front of this beautiful body of water.
Manila Baywalk is the promenade that stretches, overlooking the Manila Bay along Roxas Boulevard. This place is a good place to relax as you enjoy the sight of a setting sun. Coconut trees, giant lamp posts, cafes and restaurants, and live acoustic bands dot this two kilometer path.
Families, lovers and friends flock by the baywalk to relax and spend some time bonding with each other. The capital city will never be as beautiful as this without the scenic place. Many hotels have sprouted along the boulevard and made this picturesque view as an additional attraction aside from their excellent amenities. Tourists in particular appreciate the gift of nature and feel good being close to it.
Just a few walks across the bay are other must see destinations like the little moon shaped Rizal Park (formerly known as Luneta), the Manila Ocean Park, the walled city or Intramuros, fine hotel like the Manila Hotel and other attractions including shopping malls.
Visiting Manila is never complete without the stopping by the Bay. It has played an important role to the country’s history, trade, commerce and tourism. It is one of the treasured possessions of the city that the nature had given. As you see the view of the sunset, it signifies that as the day ends, tomorrow is coming to start a new. Somehow, the place reminds us that we should never lose hope, be thankful of the priceless gift of nature as it radiates through the splendor of Manila Bay.
