OPM Songs Popular All Over the World

The OPM in 'OPM songs' is an abbreviation of Original Philippine Music or Original Pinoy Music. OPM songs refers to Filipino Pop songs that became popular in 1970's till mid of 1990's by major pop commercial artist of Philippines; especially in ballad form.

As time has passed OPM songs have developed as well. With the development of alternative and other diverse musical styles in Philippines, OPM now refers to any original music that is made or composed in Philippines, regardless of the time and location. The lyrics can be in any dialect or language. The lyrics of OPM songs are mostly written in Taglish, English or Filipino (Tagalog) but you can still find songs written in foreign languages such as Japanese.

The history of Filipino songs or music can be traced back to the time when Spaniards colonized Philippines. Filipino songs and music is a fusion of American, European and indigenous sounds. It is influenced by Spanish colonization, pop music, rock and roll and hip hop music from US. The native sounds include Austronesian population and the Indo-Malayan Gamelan Music.
